dlr Libraries have an interesting line up of talks and exhibitions for Heritage Week 2018. Heritage week runs nationwide from 18-26 August.

The RMS Leinster disaster – a century on 
Studio Theatre, Level 1 Mon 20 August, 11.00am
Talk with Philip Lecane, National Maritime Museum Library Service and author of Torpedoed! The RMS Leinster Disaster. Free event, no booking required.

Des Branigan Ship Owner, 1918-2016
All welcome
The irony of the title above would bring a wry smile to the face of Des Branigan who was an ordinary seaman who achieved great things as a trade unionist, archaeological diver and maritime historian. This exhibition conveys a man who was deeply interested in helping people and his role in bringing one of the RMS Leinster anchors to Dún Laoghaire forms part of his fascinating story.
 
Also included is the Des Branigan maritime book collection, donated to dlr LexIcon in 2016. Exhibition curated by Joe Ryan, Irish Coast Guard (retired).
 
Dún Laoghaire Cycling Week 1955 and 1956
Studio Theatre, Level 1, Tuesday, 21 August 2018, 7pm
Film and Q & A with Barry Enright. Barry Enright digitised this black and white film, shot originally by Bill Sleith who owned a cycle shop in Dún Laoghaire town for many years.

A View from Harbour House during the Emergency
Studio Theatre, Level 1 Thurs 23 August, 11.00am
As part of Heritage Week this is a talk with Russell Kane. Russell Kane lived in Harbour House from 1937-47. Now known as Moran Park House (pictured), it is home to the Irish Design Gallery. Free event, no booking required
 

 

A talk for Heritage Week with Paul Huddie.
Dundrum Library
Tuesday 21 August, 6.30-7.30pm
All welcome.
 
The Crimean War 1854-1856, was an event of huge interest to people in Ireland from beginning to end. The aim of this talk will be to give a brief overview and understanding of the War and to discuss the reasons why people in Ireland showed such interest in the conflict and the ways in which that interest manifested itself.
 
A talk for Heritage Week with James Scannell
Shankill Library
Thursday 23 August, 7-8pm
Booking required.
 
James Scannell recounts an August 1922 Shankill Civil War incident in which an attempt was made to blow up the Dublin Road and Stonebridge Road bridges over the former Harcourt Street to Bray railway line.
