On Wednesday 22nd November, An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Tom Murphy launched the Irish Author Collection on Level 5, dlr LexIcon. This is an exciting new initiative whereby dlr Libraries will host a comprehensive collection of Irish authors in two sequences, one a reference collection and the other a lending collection, both of which will be invaluable for researchers, writers, students and the general public.

Many world class Irish authors have been associated with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown throughout the years and contemporary literary events, organised by the County Council such as the annual Mountains to Sea dlr Book Festival plus the dlr Library Voices series (both running for over a decade) are testament not only to this rich legacy but also to the dynamic contemporary literary scene in the area. Because of this, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is exceptionally well placed to attract international and national authors of the finest calibre to our festivals and events. County Librarian Mairead Owens said ‘This collection will celebrate and foster further interest in Irish writers and those associated with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. We look forward to the expansion of the Irish Author Collection, providing an important and lasting resource for the future. It is also timely that we launch this Collection as we approach the third anniversary of the opening of dlr LexIcon in December 2014.

We are pleased to launch the Irish Author Collection with an exhibition entitled Remembering Maeve, on loan from UCD Special Collections. Special thanks are due to Gordon Snell who donated a large collection of books by Maeve Binchy (many in different languages) to the Irish Author Collection, in addition to a fine collection of his own publications. Both Gordon Snell and Danielle Byrne, who donated a generous collection of her father's works (Hugh Leonard) were in attendance at the launch event.
The Irish Author Collection will grow in the coming months and years through a combination of donations and acquisitions. Further details available by contacting Lisa Murphy, Senior Librarian, dlr LexIcon at dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie or phoning 01 280 1147.
