Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Libraries and Local Enterprise Office Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (LEO DLR) were delighted to host a second Student Entrepreneur Learning Camp in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) for Transition Year students this autumn. The venue was the dlr LexIcon LAB, a space which offers programmes on coding, computer programming, 3D printing, robotics and other creative technologies to people of all ages.

Twenty-one transition year students from seven schools in Dún Laoghaire- Rathdown County took part and the Camp resulted in seven new tech projects being created by teams of three to four students. Projects ranged from a Smart Mirror and Medi-Drone to a Smart Nano Recycling Bin. The winning project was the Smart Nano Recycling Bin, coded and designed by the students in the LexIcon LAB.

The camp finished with a Show and Share event at dlr LexIcon on 29th November 2017, at which participants demonstrated their projects to the audience including camp coordinator Dr Jake Byrne and Director of Community and Cultural Development at DLRCC Dearbhla Lawson. The workshops were student-centred with an active learning pedagogy marrying theory and practice. To complete the learning cycle student teams were challenged to develop a project to integrate and apply their learning, and to share these projects at a final presentation event with their peers and other stakeholders in the Lexicon. To enrich these experience students met with guest entrepreneurs and technology developers who shared insights into career options in STEM.
