The Healthy Ireland 2018 campaign has just launched nationwide! It's all about providing support and information to help people make healthy choices for a healthier lifestyle at all stages of their lives. Libraries throughout the country are involved every step of the way and dlr Libraries have an exciting programme of events from Mandala art to Mindfulness talks, Tai Chi for arthritis to Chair Yoga, exploring bibliotherapy, gardening for health to mention just a few. There is something for everyone in the January-March What's On brochure. Look out also for displays of carefully chosen books on health and wellbeing in every library and online health information via e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines. Start the year with healthy resolutions for a new you - and remember, even small changes in your lifestyle can make a big difference overall.

An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Tom Murphy launched the dlr Libraries’ Healthy Ireland programme last week with library staff and also with Peter Varga whose exhibition Humans of Dublin is currently on display in dlr LexIcon. Many of those featured in Peter’s exhibition have triumphed over the odds and inspire us to make changes in our lives. The photo held in the attachment shows Jason Le Masurier who broke his neck while kite surfing in 2007. He was told that he would never walk again. However, 9 operations later and with many setbacks and complications plus months of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, he completed a triathlon last year. His message is ‘Do you see a crisis as a catalyst or a catastrophe – thrive in crisis! Others featured in Humans of Dublin include a man who walked all 2,500 kilometers of the Wild Atlantic Way to raise funds for Crumlin Hospital, a man who has done 15 marathons and walks 4-5 hours every day to help deal with his depression and finally a couple who initiated the Darkness Into Light runs with Pieta House following sadness and bereavement in their own lives.

Over the coming months, other dlr Libraries will launch their series of events so keep a close eye out for the many stimulating events on offer. In addition to dlr Libraries, the Local Sports Partnerships at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown has numerous initiatives to help you start an Active & Healthy 2018 - from Walking For Health (starting 20th January) to Buggy Brigade sessions, Parkrun and over 300 sports clubs in dlr to choose from, there's no excuse not to get involved!
