There is evidence to suggest that high quality self-help books can offer practical advice and strategies for dealing with a wide variety of health problems and behavioural issues. The use of books for self-help is known as bibliotherapy. The dlr Libraries’ Healthy Reading Scheme provides a selection of self-help material covering numerous topics.
We have divided the scheme into two separate lists, one for Child and Family and the other for Adult. Topics addressed include depression, anxiety, stress, anger, eating disorders, bereavement, addiction, parenting and much more. You can borrow the books free of charge from your local library. If you are not already a member of dlr Libraries, just bring along some ID which includes your address and you can join immediately. If the book you want is already on loan, you can reserve it and we will contact you when it is available.
The books included in our lists are a small selection of what we stock in our branch libraries. If you do not immediately find what you are looking for, there are many alternatives so do not hesitate to check with staff in your local library. At all times, remember that if you need more help, ensure to contact your GP for professional advice and additional support.
