Ireland is the first, and only, country in the world to have a national day of free creativity for children and young people under 18. Cruinniú na nÓg is a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s Creative Youth Plan to enable the creative potential of children and young people.

This Cruinniú na nÓg 2021 there are an abundance of wonderful events online to choose from delivered by dlr. If you would rather get outside, why not discover and explore two wonderful new Scéal Trails, one in Cabinteely and one in the west of the county in Dundrum, both will launch on Saturday 12 June.

What is a Scéal Trail?

dlr Scéal Trail is an outdoor story walk that everyone can enjoy. It's a picture book delivered in an exhibition format that you can follow, from beginning to end, as you walk with your family or friends. The aim of a Scéal Trail is to encourage reading in an outdoor setting, promote the use of books beyond the confines of library spaces and encourage engagement where parents, children, grandparents, siblings and friends can engage together with a book.

What are the books and where can they be discovered?

dlr Libraries will present The Vanishing Lake Scéal Trail in Dundrum Library garden on Saturday 12 June.

From debut author/illustrator Paddy Donnelly, comes a captivating tale celebrating a young girl’s determination, a Grandad’s wisdom, and the fantastical wonders of the natural world. This beautiful book is filled with imagination, the natural world, and the magic of storytelling. With thanks to YeeHoo publishers for permission to use as a Scéal Trail.

dlr Libraries will present Spidey Scéal Trail in Cabinteely Library garden on Saturday 12 June.

Spidey - A delightful picture book written by dlr Senior Librarian Carmel Uí Cheallaigh and illustrated by Fintan Taite. Tá suim an-mhór ag Séimí beag sna damháin alla. Bíonn siad le feiceáil i ngach áit, dar leis! Ba bhreá leis féin bheith ina Spidey lá éigin! Little Séimí just loves spiders! No matter where he goes he can think of nothing else. If only he could be a spider himself! Spidey is an Irish language book but will have English translations to make the project bi-lingual and accessible, while at the same time supporting the use and reading of Irish language books. With thanks to publisher Cló Mhaigh Eo for permission to use Spidey as a Scéal Trail.

A talk on unusual natural phenomena such as Vanishing Lakes and ecology for schoolchildren with Dr. Paul Wilson, Hydrogeologist

Dr. Paul Wilson is Hydrogeologist with the British Geological Survey. He studies and understands how water that is underground works so that we can protect from getting contaminated and can use it for our water supplies. He became fascinated with vanishing lakes as a child when his parents would drive past Loughareema near Ballycastle in Count Antrim, when going on holidays. In 2014, he looked into why it empties and fills up and discovered that no-one really knew so he started a science study to work out how it worked, where the water went and why it was located where it was.
