We are delighted to launch two brand new Scéal Trails this summer 2023 as part of Cruinniú na nÓg, Irelands national day of free creativity for children and young people.

A Scéal Trail is a story book you can read as you walk outdoors with your friends and family. You are invited to follow the story, page by page, from beginning to end.

Don’t Worry, Little Crab by Chris Haughton is to be found at dlr LexIcon and Amuigh Faoin Spéir written by Sadhbh Devlin and illustrated by Brian Fitzgerald is in the playground at Killiney Hill park. Amuigh Faoin Spéir is an Irish language book that has been translated into English to make it a bi-lingual Scéal trail.

Don’t Worry, Little Crab by Chris Haughton is a beautiful, dazzling book about taking the time you need to overcome your fears. In the rockpool above the sea, live two crabs: Big Crab and Little Crab. Today, they’re going for a dip in the sea. “This is going to be so great!” says Little Crab. But then Little Crab catches a first glimpse of the water... Oh. The waves! They're ENORMOUS. "Oh..."

Will Little Crab be brave enough to go in?  From the multi award-winning picture book maker of A Bit Lost, Oh No, George! and Shh! We Have a Plan comes a bold, beautiful picture book about working through anxiety and, with the support of a loved one, building up the courage to try something new.

Chris Haughton is an illustrator and author originally from Killiney who now lives in London.

One of the most exciting new voices in children’s literature, Chris is the acclaimed picture book creator of A Bit Lost, Oh No, George!, Shh! We Have a Plan, Maybe and many more.

His seven books have been translated into many languages around the world. He also made an iOS app, HAT MONKEY and a virtual reality experience LITTLE EARTH. He has made lots of free downloadable art activities which can be found at chrishaughton.com

Chris will be joining us in dlr LexIcon on Sat 8 July along with his sister Lynn Haughton for a very special sea-themed event for children and families, part of the dlr Coastival Festival.

Amuigh Faoin Spéir Tá Rua breá sásta go bhfuil an deireadh seachtaine ann agus gur féidir leis luí siar ar an tolg le breathnú ar chartúin ar feadh an lae. Tá Mamaí sásta go bhfuil an deireadh seachtaine ann freisin ach tá plean iomlán éagsúil aici siúd don lá. Plean a chiallaíonn go mbeidh siad fuar, fliuch agus salach, dar le Rua. B’fhearr leis féin fanacht te, tirim agus glan - ach an éireoidh leis?

Rua is delighted that the weekend is here. He’s looking forward to lying on the sofa and watching his favourite cartoons all day. Mammy is happy that it’s the weekend too, but she has a completely different plan – a plan that, according to Rua, means they’ll all get cold, wet, and dirty. He’d much prefer to stay warm, dry, and clean – but will he get his way? A joyful celebration of the beauty of nature and the special sofa-snuggles that follow a big adventure …amuigh faoin spéir.

Sadhbh Devlin is an award-winning children’s writer who lives and works in Bray, Co. Wicklow. She has had four Irish-language picturebooks published by Futa Fata so far. Sadhbh was the dlr Writer in Residence in 2019/2020 and the book she wrote during her residency, Geansaí Ottó (illustrated by Róisín Hahessy), became the very first dlr Scéal Trail! She is thrilled that her latest book, Amuigh Faoin Spéir, has been selected for this new trail.

Is scríbhneoir do pháistí a bhfuil gradam buaite aici í Sadhbh Devlin. Tá cónaí uirthi i mBré, Co. Chill Mhantáin. Tá ceithre leabhair dá cuid foilsithe ag Futa Fata go dtí seo. Bhí Sadhbh mar an Scríbhneoir Cónaithe le dlr in 2019/2020 agus bhí an leabhar a scríobh sí i rith an tréimhse sin roghnaithe mar an chéad dlr Scéal Trail! Tá áthas an domhan uirthi go bhfuil a leabhar nua, Amuigh Faoin Spéir, roghnaithe don Scéal Trail nua seo.

Brian Fitzgerald is an illustrator who lives and works in Dún Laoghaire. He has illustrated picture books for publishers in the UK, US, Canada, Italy, France, S. Korea and Ireland. The artwork for his latest book Amuigh Faoin Spéir was inspired by walks on Killiney Hill.

Is maisitheoir é Brian Fitzgerald atá ag obair agus ina chónaí i nDún Laoghaire. Tá pictiúirleabhair maisithe aige d’fhoilsitheoirí sa Ríocht Aontaithe, Meiriceá, Ceanada, an Iodáil, an Fhrainc, an Chóiré Theas agus in Éirinn. Tá an ealaín ina leabhar Amuigh Faoin Spéir spreagtha ag a shiúlóidí ar Chnoc Chill Iníon Léinín.

Sadhbh and Brian will be hosting an outdoor Scéal Trail event in Killiney Hill Playground on Sat 10 June that will include a reading of the book, illustration workshop as well as hot chocolate to finish in Killiney Hill Tea Rooms!

dlr Scéal Trails are an initiative of dlr Libraries. Supported by the Creative Ireland Programme.
