Celebrating the History of Irish Local Government
24 July-31 Aug
As we complete the recent local elections for 2019, it is timely to note that April 2019 marked the 120th Anniversary of the first local elections following the enactment of the Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1898 which provided the legislative basis for much of our present local government system. It is of particular significance that women were given the franchise, albeit a limited one, for the first time in Ireland in the 1899 elections. The exhibition notes the importance of the role of the Councillor and raises public awareness on the work and activities of local authorities throughout the country.
