Event Description
Exhibition running from 26th February to 31st March - Level 3 (foyer)
All welcome
Following extensive research at Deansgrange Cemetery, local historian Shabnam Vasisht has discovered the remarkable
achievements of a wide range of Irish people who lived and worked in India during British rule.
There were servicemen who fought in the Indian Mutiny; hard-working civil servants and eminent judges; and missionaries who aimed to convert sun-worshipping heathens to ‘muscular Christianity’.
Shabnam’s quest was to bring these extraordinary people to our attention. Having managed to sort out the Maxwell Montagus from the Montagu Maxwells, she has recorded their experiences in this revealing exhibition and book.
The publication and accompanying exhibition are supported with a grant from dlr Heritage Office.
