dlr Libraries host the launch of the National Public Library Strategy 2018-2022
Michael Ring, T.D. Minister for Rural and Community Development will be in attendance with our newly elected Cathaoirleach Ossian Smyth to officially launch the National Public Library Strategy 2018- 2022 at the dlr LexIcon.
The new strategy will underpin the continued development of public libraries and position them at the centre of the community, meeting the information, learning and cultural needs of all citizens. This ambitious five year strategy will see fines abolished and opening hours extended. It will also continue to enhance digital and technology capacity across the library service. This will include digital learning centres in all suitable libraries and extend the My Open LIbrary Service to up to 100 libraries by 2023.
dlr libraries statistics for 2017: dlr has eight branch libraries, with 70,000 registered members (32% of the population). In 2017, over 1.3 million items were borrowed with 1 million + footfall to all the brances with 525,708 to the LexIcon alone (recognised by Bord Failte).
The five year strategy is a joint initiative of the Department of Rural and Community Development, the County and City Management Association (CCMA) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA). Please see the strategy in related documents.
