Although summer is nearly over it's not too late for you to register and take part in the Summer Stars 2020 reading challenge! We've decided to push the end date out to 30 September so there's lots more time for you to get reading and return your reading card to win some great prizes.

Summer Stars is a free national reading challenge which takes places over the summer months to encourage children to begin or continue reading for pleasure while on school holidays. Summer Stars is a great way to keep up reading skills in an enjoyable way. The challenge is open to children of all ages and all reading counts - independent reading, shared reading, bedtime reading. Children can count any books read as part of the challenge, not just library books. And remember we have a great selection of ebooks available to download from our online library.

Each child who joins the challenge will receive a reading card with the challenge to read eight books over the period of the challenge. You can call in to any of our branches to pick up a reading card. Alternatively you can download and print off a card here. Participants will receive a stamp on their card for each book that they read and once eight stamps have been collected the card can be returned to the Summer Stars collection point in their branch. All cards returned are entered into a draw for some great prizes at the end of September.

We are delighted to announce this year's prizes:

  • 5 annual passes to Dublin Zoo
  • 35 x €30 vouchers for local retailers

Remember - if you're not in you can't win!

You'll find lots of fun activities as well as recommended reads and tips to encourage children to read for pleasure on the national Summer Stars page on the Libraries Ireland website. There's also an opportunity to win even more prizes by entering the Summer Stars short story competition. The deadline for this competition is 5pm on 31st August and you'll find full details here. Best of luck!
