Summer Stars is the national annual reading incentive programme run in all public libraries across Ireland, from the middle of June until the end of August. It encourages children to keep reading during the school holidays and is available free of charge.

All children are invited to take part by registering at their local library. Every child taking part gets a Summer Stars Reading card and is challenged to read 8 books. Stamps are awarded for every book read, and there are some great fun incentives for those who complete a Reading Card, which are also entered into a prize draw. The Grand Draw prizes include a family pass for Airfield, multi-sport camp and family swim tickets from dlr Leisure, and vouchers for local retailers.

So, the more you read, the more chances you have to win!

dlr Summer Stars 2021 is being launched on Monday 14 June by An Cathaoirleach Cllr Una Power. Watch the Launch Video here.

This year Summer Stars starts with a programme of events for schools. Every first and second class in dlr is invited to a Monster Storytime via Zoom. It takes place on Monday 21 June at 10am with Marianne McShane. Marianne will be reading live from her debut picture book, Rónan and the Mermaid. Email: librarybookings@dlrcoco.ie to register your class.

For families, there will be new storytimes debuting online each Friday at 3.30pm from 18 June and throughout July. You can watch these videos on our Facebook page here.

Also, on Friday 18 June, test your general knowledge with a Summer Stars Family Fun Quiz. Just email quiz master Seán at libraryquiz@dlrcoco.ie for more information and to register.
