Joseph McGrath and Thomas Cullen: a Statesman and a Soldier 1919-1924

Normal or One Off
Joseph McGrath and Thomas Cullen: a Statesman and a Soldier 1919-1924
Event Description

Both McGrath (1887-1966) and Cullen (1891-1926) were inextricably linked with the fight for Irish independence and the establishment of the Irish Free State in the period 1916 – 1924: McGrath chiefly as a politician and Cullen as a close associate of Michael Collins and a member of his security team, the notorious Squad. Both were members of the Anglo-Irish Treaty Delegation and in 1922 supported the new Government – one as a politician, the other as a member of the National Army. To mark the digitisation of previously unpublished documents belonging to both men, which were held in Cabinteely House, this exhibition gives a flavour of their participation in and contributions to the early days of the State through their own papers.
