One Dublin, One Book 2026 Setting the Scene: Ireland in the 1950's - Fintan O'Toole in conversation with Catriona Crowe
Event Description

One Dublin, One Book aims to encourage everyone in Dublin to read a designated book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year. This annual project is a Dublin City Council initiative, led by Dublin City Libraries and Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, which encourages reading for pleasure. Christine Falls by John Banville is the One Dublin, One Book choice for 2026, and vividly conjures the society, politics and atmosphere of 1950s Dublin, from the power of the Church and social conservatism, to the treatment of women and emigration to America.

dlr Libraries are delighted to host this event in the Studio Theatre, dlr LexIcon. Join author and journalist Fintan O’Toole in conversation with author and archivist Catriona Crowe as they discuss the social, historical and economic landscape of Ireland at the time, exploring the broader context in which Banville’s novel unfolds.
