Pedals, People and Place: A History of Cycling in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown
From Victorian leisure cycling, to racing clubs and the birth of Irish mountain biking, . Pedals, People and Place charts the growth of the cycling in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown over more than 130 years. The exhibition explores how the bicycle shaped local communities, recreation, sport and everyday life, while highlighting the area's remarkable contribution to Irish cycling history.
The exhibition was curated by Jim Dunleavy, dlr Archivist. At the heart of the exhibition is the DLR/CYC Dún Laoghaire Cycling Week Collection, generously donated to the dlr Archives by the Enright Family. These striking photographs document the famous Dún Laoghaire Cycling Week of the 1950s, a major international sporting event that attracted competitors from Ireland and abroad and drew thousands of spectators to the town each year. The collection offers a unique visual record of one of the most important chapters in the area's sporting heritage.
