dlr Libraries: What to expect from Monday 8 June
As the Government Roadmap progresses, dlr Libraries are planning a gradual re-opening of our services in compliance with Government Guidelines. We are planning to open our physical spaces in phases from the 29 June and will keep you updated on these plans.
However, from the week beginning Monday 8 June, dlr Libraries are delighted to take a step closer to re-opening by offering our new Bag a Book: Contact & Collect service!
Bag a Book - Contact & Collect: How it works
Contact your local participating dlr branch library. We can prepare a selection of books, CDs and DVDs for you, based on your reading habits, hobbies and interests. While we can’t offer you specific titles or fulfil reserves just yet, we know you’ve been missing our library material, so this will help bridge the gap until you can visit again!
Library spaces will be restricted to library staff and will only be accessible to the public on a ‘contact & collect’ basis, where members can order items and collect them from the library.
dlr Contact & Collect service will operate in the following branches from 8 June:
Blackrock, Dalkey, Deansgrange, Dundrum, LexIcon, Stillorgan
Orders can be placed online through the form here or by calling your local branch library. We would encourage our customers where possible to use the online form to allow phone lines to be available for other users.
Don’t forget all the other free library services we continue to offer:
- join the library online
- download eBooks and eAudiobooks
- read magazines and newspapers
- take eLearning or language courses
- watch or listen to storytimes
- take part in other activities like online bookclubs

We are anticipating a high volume of interest, so to ensure we can deal with your request as speedily as possible, phones will be specifically available for requests from 12.30 - 4.30pm Monday – Saturday.
We have maximised collection times for your safety and convenience. These will be pre-arranged with library staff and public. Collection times will also include evenings and Saturdays.
In order to manage queues safely and efficiently and in line with social distancing requirements, we ask that one member from each household come to the library at the arranged time.
You cannot come into the library to browse the books during this Phase.
Returns
Customers may begin returning materials on 8 June — although we ask you not to rush items back all at once! There are currently 100,000+ items on loan that will be quarantined for 72 hours upon return. Items will remain on library cards until the quarantine period had passed.
We cannot accept direct customer-to-staff returns. Returns will be accepted at designated drop-off points in each participating library. All items on loan have been renewed – There are no library fines or overdue notices.
FAQs
Can I pick a time for me to collect my items?
Library staff will do their best to accommodate your requirements, but we can’t guarantee that we can give you the exact time you want.
Can I reserve an item online or by phone and then collect it?
No, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate specific requests during this phase.
Before the libraries closed I got a message to say a book I reserved was ready for collection: can I still get that book?
Starting 8 June, dlr Library staff will begin contacting customers who had holds to collect prior to shutdown.
Please DO NOT attempt to pick up items until you have been contacted and given a collection time.
I only want a particular book, what can I do?
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee specific items during this phase. Library staff will pick books or other authors in the same genre, or ask the library staff to make a selection for you.
How many items can I get at any one time?
You can take out a maximum of 6 items during this phase.
Can I return books that I have out since before the lockdown?
Yes, we’ll be taking books back but only at our participating Contact & Collect libraries. If your local library is not one of the 6 libraries, please do not go to the library to drop books back as we won’t be able to take them there.
If I can’t return my books will I be blocked from borrowing more books if I exceed the limit of 12?
No. Library staff will override the limit if necessary and make sure you can collect the books you’ve requested.
Are the staffed hours for my local library the same as before?
No. Please see temporary hours for participating dlr Contact & Collect Libraries during this Phase.
