Join Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council on Saturday 10 June to celebrate the annual national Day of Creativity for Young People. Come along to dlr LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire or Samuel Beckett Civic Campus in Ballyogan and join in the fun!

Across the County, we will be celebrating Cruinniú Na nÓg with a vibrant programme of free outdoor events that will give everyone the opportunity to let their creativity shine! From circus skills and percussion workshops to art and dance workshops; from kites to beatboxing, there’s something for everyone at dlr Cruinniú na nÓg 2023. dlr Libraries will also be launching new Scéal Trails on the day, so it's a day not to be missed!

All events are outdoors unless otherwise stated. In the event of bad weather, activities will move indoors. Some events require pre-booking via Eventbrite.

All dlr Cruinniú 2023 events are supported by the Creative Ireland Programme

Sensory Room

We particularly welcome families with neurodivergent young people to join us on the day. We will have Sensory Rooms available in dlr LexIcon and Samuel Beckett Civic Campus, equipped with Dark Dens and other sensory toys should young visitors need time out to self-regulate during the day.

Move N’ Groove workshops

(Neurodiverse-inclusive event)

Join Laura Dowdall for family fun workshops for children and their parents with Creative Dance, Body Puzzles, Tactile Play, Partner-work, Body Stories and more! Come and enjoy creative fun and playful connection with your family! Untangle your body and mind and learn new skills for family self-care and emotional regulation. Wear comfortable clothing as you will be moving on the grass and in contact with your partners!

There are 2 workshops:

10.00am-10.45am

11.00-11.45am

Suitable for ages 5-12 yrs.

Max 24 per session:12 children accompanied by a parent/guardian.

These workshops are free but places are limited so booking is essential via Eventbrite.

Spark: a multi-sensory dance & music experience designed specifically for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities by Jess Rowell

Join inclusive dance artist's Jess Rowell & Brona Jackson with musician Alessandro Zangrando (Zar Acoustic) for a magical journey through space and time. A multi-sensory dance and music experience full of wonder, intrigue and connection that is guaranteed to inspire and transport its audiences to new dimensions. Jess, Brona and Alessandro worked with children and young people in Carmona School to develop this new experience for young people with complex needs and their families. The set and sensory props are being created by Eugenia Genunchi and Aidan Fox for this magical new adventure.

There is one session on Friday 9 June:

Make Paper Circuits & Light Up Bookmark

Inventors Club will lead a hands-on LED paper circuit workshop where you'll learn the basics of circuit design and create your own light-up bookmarks! Using a variety of materials like copper tape, aluminium foil, LEDs, paperclips, plastic bottles, feathers, beads and paper, you'll be able to flex your creative muscles while at the same time explore the principles of circuitry and discover how to create a functional circuit. With the guidance of an expert instructor, you'll create your own unique paper circuit design and bring it to life with a beautiful display of LED lights.

Join the Street Theatre Ireland expert team for these workshops where you will get to practise a variety of basic circus skills, including plate spinning, juggling and hula hooping!

Percussion workshops

Join Sebastian and Drum Shorts for an introduction to Percussion!

Find your own beat and explore rhythms and patterns with different percussion instruments. Learn how to hold drum sticks correctly and play simple 2 handed patterns. Learn a simple body percussion pattern, get a demonstration of how the hand drums work and try them yourself. Play along to a song by the end of the workshop!

Lesson and sheet music will be available to view on the Rockjam Website.

There are 3 workshops on the day:

Juggling Show

Johnny the Juggler is Ireland’s favourite and most entertaining juggling performer. The comedy and juggling skills rival each other in this fast-paced fantastic performance. Dig It Kids: Make your own Anglo-Norman Shield

Learn about the arrival of the Anglo-Normans to this part of Ireland, and the shields they used to protect themselves and to identify their family and whose side they were on. Find out about heraldry, what symbols and colours meant to medieval knights. Design and make your own shield, designing a family crest that represents you and your family. Bring your family shield home with you to hang in pride of place.

Messy art with Laura and Lucinda

(Neurodiverse-inclusive event)

Join Laura & Lucinda from QuaintBabyArt.com for creative art workshops with a unique variety of messy, colourful art & crafts for children and their families. Come along to freestyle paint your own work of art on canvas and explore colourful and exciting textures to make creations with clay, bubble wrap and slime! One adult guardian is required to attend and remain with each child and can feel free to join in the fun. Wear old clothes that can get paint on them! Tables/stations will be set up as Invitations to Create in a whole variety of unique ways!

There is one continuous drop-in session:

2.00pm - 4.00pm

The session is fully inclusive for all children, but we especially welcome those who are neurodiverse. There will be an area set up with a selection of sensory toys and equipment. Should children need time to self-regulate there will be space and time to do so. All children need to be supervised by parents/guardians as there are small parts and paint etc. not suitable for ingesting.

Join the team from Dig It Kids and unleash your inner Indiana Jones! Become an archaeologist for the day and be part of a mock excavation that focuses on South Dublin history. Learn the basics of archaeological excavation and see what you can find; examine, identify and discuss your find, and learn more about the history of the area.

One of two new dlr Scéal Trails launching in time for Cruinniú na nÓg 2023, join author Sadhbh Devlin, illustrator Brian Fitzgerald and their little friend Rua on a big adventure Amuigh Faoin Spéir! Rua is delighted that the weekend is here. He’s looking forward to lying on the sofa and watching his favourite cartoons all day. Mammy is happy that it’s the weekend too, but she has a completely different plan... Amuigh Faoin Spéir is a joyful celebration of the beauty of nature and the special sofa-snuggles that follow a big adventure in the great outdoors. Sadhbh will read the story as you follow our brand new dlr Scéal Trail and then join in with some nature-inspired drawing with Brian. After our big adventure, join us in the Killiney Hill Tea Rooms for a yummy hot chocolate!

This is a bilingual Gaeilge/English event. Please wear suitable footwear and appropriate clothing for changeable Irish weather (sunscreen/raincoats/umbrella).

Kite-making workshops with Go Fly Your Kite!

Join the team from Go Fly your Kite for 3 kite-making workshops across the day. During the workshop, participants will trace, colour and build their Kite, and then get the opportunity to fly it afterwards! The workshops take place in the nearby Ballyogan Parish Hall, with participants flying their new kites on the green space at the Samuel Beckett Centre afterwards.

Join the team from Dig It Kids to learn how High Crosses in the County were the storytelling books for monks, as they told stories from the Bible and from the lives of the Kings. Learn how to draw Celtic designs as the border of an art panel and draw something in the panel that tells the story of something important to you about where you live. Help decorate a larger High Cross on the day.

Beatboxing workshops

Join street artist/busker Thunderclap Murphy for live looping demonstrations and a Beatboxing lesson. He will play songs from his street performances and demonstrate how he builds layers of sound using loop pedals, beatboxing and effect pedals. Participants will be given a lesson in beatboxing techniques and encouraged to beat box along to popular songs, record their own loops and beatbox along.

Creative Play with Active Kids Academy

(Neurodiverse-inclusive event)

Join Lisa and her team from Active Kids Academy for a drop-in session that focuses on creativity & imagination through fine motor skills activities and play. There will be a range of activities such as peg boards, squidgies and magnets to allow participants to build, create and explore. We will also have an obstacle course for you to create your own scenarios, worlds & adventures. Children can work individually or in groups.

All children must be accompanied & supervised by an adult for the duration of their stay.

There is one continuous session:

2.00pm - 4.00pm

The session is fully inclusive for all children, but we especially welcome those who are neurodiverse. There will be an area set up with a selection of sensory toys and equipment. Should children need time to self-regulate there will be space and time to do so.
