American Housewife

A book of very funny satirical short stories, each one a gem, detailing the hidden domestic (sometimes murderous) lives of a series of unforgettable women.

Uprooted

An enchanting summer read inspired by eastern European folk and fairytales. Once every ten years a girl from Agnieszka's village is chosen to serve the powerful wizard who protects their valley - this time he makes an unexpected choice.

The Kill

The Kill is number 5 in the Maeve Kerrigan police procedural series and my favourite - possibly because it was the first one I read, out of sequence, a few years ago when I was 8 hours waiting to be seen in a hospital emergency dept. (It actually managed to distract me from the hard chair and the person falling asleep on my shoulder.) I’ve since read all the other Kerrigan novels and they’re just as good.
Maeve Kerrigan is a young, ambitious DC working with a London Murder Squad – beautiful (I’m guessing), of Irish descent (yay!), feisty but vulnerable, she has to fight her corner to be taken

Miles of Smiles

With the nights setting in, I have found a book that will cheer us all up. It's called Miles of Smiles. A really lovely, sweet book about how a simple act of a smile passed on goes a long way. I don't want to spoil it too much, but it will leave you smiling by the end. A wonderful read for the little ones.

I Will Love You Anyway

My choice read is the Kids book is “I will love you always” by Mike and Chloe Inkpen. Bring on the cuteness: this book is beautifully put together with a winning combination of lovely illustrations and child friendly humour, about a relationship a dog has with its owner. An enjoyable read for any age.

Get ready to say Awwww!

Then We Came to the End

The routines and machinations of office life laid bare as morale at an ad agency gradually unravels. Darkly funny.

Seven Years in Tibet

The extraordinary autobiography of an Austrian mountaineer and his escape from a British internment camp in India. Set during World War II he traverses the mighty Himalayas into Tibet, travels to the forbidden city of Lhasa and develops a close relationship to the Dalai Lama.

Eligible

Imagine Elizabeth Bennett racing a lycra-clad Mr Darcy through the streets of Cincinatti, and appearing with him on a reality television show based on “The Bachelor”. At first glance it’s unthinkable and certainly not for the purists but you have to hand it to Sittenfeld, if you’re brave enough to take on the task of up-dating a classic as well-loved as Pride & Prejudice you might as well go the whole hog and throw every modern trope into the mix, as she has here. As part of the Austen Project Sittenfeld was commissioned to re-write P&P to appeal to a modern audience –Joanna Trollope had

In The Woods

With the publication of the latest novel in the Dublin murder squad series (The Trespasser) it might be a good time to check out the first in the series - "In the woods". Not only is it a very well written crime novel, with two  well drawn main characters, it is a very evocative story of growing up in South County Dublin in the 1980s.

Arcadia

An intricately plotted novel with several overlapping narratives and timelines. A rich and rewarding read.
