Autism awareness in dlr Libraries 2019

Did you know April is Autism Awareness Month, and Tuesday 2nd April 2019 is World Autism Awareness Day?
 
The percentage of children diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum (AS) in Ireland is growing year on year.  Ireland does not have an autism registry, this means we do not formally record the number of people diagnosed with autism in Ireland. As well as this, we do not ask people if they are autistic on the Census. It is estimated that around 1 in 100 people have a diagnosis of autism. Call for dlr Writer in Residence 2019-2020

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council invites applications for a Writer in Residence for the period July 2019 to June 2020. This Writer in Residence is managed by dlr Libraries. The residency is open to writers working in any genre (e.g. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, script-writing, etc). The residency this year will focus on the theme of inclusivity and will have a particular emphasis on creativity for 6-12 year olds.

Cancellation of event

dlr Libraries wish to advise that the Drag Story Time event planned to take place on Wednesday 26th June at 3pm in Deansgrange Library will not now go ahead. This event was programmed as an age appropriate, family-friendly story time session. However, following a review in terms of age appropriateness, this event will not now go ahead at this time, and may be rescheduled as part of a future Book Festival lineup.

With regard to the cancellation of the Drag Story Time event in June, we wish to clarify that the cancellation was due to our significant concern at the high level of degrading, inappropriate comments on social media about the performers and library staff.  
 
dlr Libraries object to homophobia in all its forms and as per our social media guidelines, we reserve the right to remove content or comments that may be considered offensive, abusive or defamatory. 
 
Health and Safety is always at the forefront of our concerns.  We would like to reassure the public that this event was age-appropriate and

dlr Libraries will be closed from Friday 19 April to Monday 22 April inclusive.* The libraries will re-open on Tuesday 23 April.

dlr Libraries are delighted to announce that our new app is available to install from the Google Play Store!

Cruinniú na nÓg 2019

Cruinniú na nÓg is back! 2019 is the second year of this nationwide festival of creativity for children, organised through the Creative Ireland Programme and this year there are 750 events planned in locations all around the country!
 
Fernhill Park and Gardens is the location for the biggest programme of events in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Fernhill opened as a public park earlier this year and we are delighted to be able to hold some great activities here as part of Cruinniú na nÓg!
