Carmel Kelly: Anne Devlin Ireland’s First Female Political Prisoner

Referred to as the faithful housekeeper of Robert Emmet, Anne was much more than that. Her pivotal role in the insurrection of 1803 led to her spending three years in Kilmainham Gaol. She bravely resisted bribes, threats, and torture rather than say one word against Emmet or name any of his associates. On this, the 175th anniversary of her death, hear all about this remarkable Irish patriot.

Carmel Kelly is a retired librarian and the author of ten children’s books in Irish and English. She loves reading, researching and writing picture books and history books for children.
