Neglected Reputations: The Yeats Sisters Lily and Elizabeth
This talk with Eunan McKinney - from the Yeats Sisters Commemoration Project - will explore the neglected creative and entrepreneurial reputations of Susan 'Lily' and Elizabeth Yeats, who for over 40 years in the first half of the 20 century, made a lasting contribution to the cultural identity of an emerging new state, the Irish Arts & Crafts movement and the empowerment of young Irish women. Eunan will reflect on their family background, the early influence of William Morris, their relationship with the pioneering Evelyn Gleeson and the establishment of Dun Emer Industries, and the sisters’ founding of Cuala Industries which for forty years published over 70 works while advancing the artistic careers of numerous Irish artists, designers and writers.
