Pond

A strange and beautiful book, glinting with humour, about nothing and everything.

Kew Garden Children's Cookbook

I thought this book was wonderful. It features how to grow vegetables and provides a recipe to cook your freshly grown veg! What a lovely idea to keep children and adults active. Everyone enjoys a home cooked meal (prepared by the children). The book also encourages healthy living and eating and getting back to nature.
Getting muddy, dirty and lots of outdoor adventure what child would resist

End of the Affair

A tale of adultery, love, lust, hate, guilt and God, The End of the Affair is obviously based loosely on Greene's own life. It's well known that Greene, a Catholic, had an affair with Lady Catherine Walston, the wife of the Labour peer Harry Walston, and that has heavily influenced the novel's main characters Bendrix and Sarah….. [Spoiler atlerts!] Sarah is married to a civil servant but begins a passionate affair with the writer Bendrix. The affair ends suddenly and Bendrix becomes obsessive, wanting to find out why it came to an end. They meet again some years later but Bendrix is full of

Lie With Me

This was a Richard & Judy pick for Spring 2017 and I’d agree with them that this is a good summer read, both as a psychological thriller along the lines of Gone Girl and as a character study of the literary poseur in the character of Paul Morris, the author of a one-hit-wonder he wrote while at university and is still milking years later.
First though I have to remark that it’s gas how lately the titles of novels have to contain certain words to gain attention – first it was “girl” and now “lie” and in between we had “sister” and any combination of “husband” & “wife” (just type any of these

American Gods

American Gods follows Shadow Moon. Released from prison he discovers that his wife and best friend have been killed in a car crash and that they were having an affair together. Lost he ends up taking a job from the mysterious Mr Wednesday to be his driver and assistant cum bodyguard. His journey with Wednesday will take him across the states and introduce him to the Gods that populate America both new and old.
A unique combination of road story, horror and dark fantasy this book is highly recommended. It is also genuinely thought provoking in its pondering on the nature of gods, worship and

Kingdom Come

The superheroes of old have moved into their twilight years and handed the reins to the next generation, but those new heroes do not possess the guiding principles of what it means to be a hero leaving them to squabble and destroy one another in a pathetic power struggle. The old guard must come to grips with their mistakes and regrets to bring the world back into balance. With breathtaking artwork by Alex Ross, this would be in my top 3 comics of all time!

This Book is Gay

A well-organised guide to LGBTQ issues offering facts and support in accessible language.

When Mystical Creatures Attack

A book of linked short stories that explore the lives of a high school teacher and her students in a small Texan town. Very funny, warm and occasionally heartbreaking this is a book whose characters and stories stay with you.

This is Where I Leave You

This is the story of a family seen through the eyes of Judd Foxman as he reluctantly spends 7 days sitting Shiva with them to mourn the passing of his father. He is also mourning the loss of his wife, who has recently left him for his schlock jock boss and now announces that she’s pregnant, sending Judd into a tailspin.
I loved this book, and even though the Foxmans take a bit of laughing off, they come across as real people with believable faults and foibles. Judd runs the gamut of emotions from anger and misery to a kind of acceptance, and an acknowledgment that family is part of what we are
