The Living and the Dead in Winsford

A stand alone novel from the author of the Van de Veeteren series. Set for the most part in rural England. It's a very atmospheric psychological thriller with an intriquing and sympathetic central character.

Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar

Everything you wanted to know about Stalin but were afraid to ask! An exceptionally well researched biography of the Soviet dictator. Despite the unpleasant nature of the subject the book never flags and the author even manages to raise a few laughs here and there.

My Swordhand is Singing

A freaky folktale for readers who like their vampires "old school". About a young man and his father who thought the past was dead and buried...

Bee-Wigged

Jerry is a very large bee. Although he is friendly, people are reluctant to talk to him. One day he finds a wig and is now mistaken for a boy! Engaging with illustrations and bold colors highlight this funny and ultimately cheerful tale of acceptanc

Americanah

An epic love story which spans two decades and three continents.  A page turner.

American Housewife

A book of very funny satirical short stories, each one a gem, detailing the hidden domestic (sometimes murderous) lives of a series of unforgettable women.

Uprooted

An enchanting summer read inspired by eastern European folk and fairytales. Once every ten years a girl from Agnieszka's village is chosen to serve the powerful wizard who protects their valley - this time he makes an unexpected choice.

The Kill

The Kill is number 5 in the Maeve Kerrigan police procedural series and my favourite - possibly because it was the first one I read, out of sequence, a few years ago when I was 8 hours waiting to be seen in a hospital emergency dept. (It actually managed to distract me from the hard chair and the person falling asleep on my shoulder.) I’ve since read all the other Kerrigan novels and they’re just as good.
Maeve Kerrigan is a young, ambitious DC working with a London Murder Squad – beautiful (I’m guessing), of Irish descent (yay!), feisty but vulnerable, she has to fight her corner to be taken

Miles of Smiles

With the nights setting in, I have found a book that will cheer us all up. It's called Miles of Smiles. A really lovely, sweet book about how a simple act of a smile passed on goes a long way. I don't want to spoil it too much, but it will leave you smiling by the end. A wonderful read for the little ones.

I Will Love You Anyway

My choice read is the Kids book is “I will love you always” by Mike and Chloe Inkpen. Bring on the cuteness: this book is beautifully put together with a winning combination of lovely illustrations and child friendly humour, about a relationship a dog has with its owner. An enjoyable read for any age.
