What’s in a name? Dun Leary – Kingstown – Dún Laoghaire

A visual history through postcards celebrating the centenary of the town’s name change during the War of Independence.

In 1821 the name Dunleary or Dun Leary was changed to Kingstown in honour of George IV’s visit to this bustling and rapidly developing town. In 1920 it was officially given the name Dún Laoghaire, referring back to the original Irish name for Dunleary. It is asserted that the name came from an old fort (Dún) that belonged to a chieftain called Laoghaire. It was a deliberate political act during the War of Independence, an act of defiance against the old order in Ireland. Name

Managing challenging behaviours with Aoife Lee

It can be difficult enough to deal with children's challenging behaviours at the best of times but home life can be even more frustrating at times of crisis such as many of us have been experiencing recently - trying to home-school (often while also working remotely), keeping children busy when they can't meet friends, dealing with the sudden loss of employment and income etc. Aoife Lee of Parent Support has provided dlr Libraries with a series of short videos which aim to increase our understanding of why children behave as they do, how to take control when behaviour becomes disruptive, how

A celebration of Summer! Online exhibition of children's art dlr Libraries

dlr libraries advertised a childrens art competition on 13 May 2020. Children from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown were asked to create a piece of art inspired by the title:

'Summertime is for.....'

We had a great response and were delighted to receive over 50 entries within the age categories of 5 years and under, 6-8 years and 9-12 years.

Selecting winners for children's art competitions is a difficult task. We engaged with a local artist to pick winning entries on our behalf.  Our judge has kindly provided commentary and encouragement to all the children that entered the competition. We are aware
