Shifting Foundations, the Big Houses of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown - A new book and exhibition at dlr LexIcon

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Lettie McCarthy, has launched a new book and accompanying exhibition in dlr LexIcon, Level 3, running until the 9th of February 2022.

Shifting Foundations – The Big Houses of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown explores the history of some of the big houses of the county including the three houses that are managed by dlr County Council at Marlay, Cabinteely and Fernhill. Edited by the dlr Historian in Residence, David Gunning, contributors to the book include Peter Pearson, Rob Goodbody, Georgina Sweetnam, Nicola Kelly and Dr. Deirdre Raftery.

A Scéal Trail is an outside story walk that everyone can enjoy! A scéal trail or story walk is a book delivered in an exhibition format that you can follow, from beginning to end, as you walk with your family or friends.

dlr Libraries Christmas calendar of book recommendations for younger readers!

In the lead up to Christmas 2021, dlr Libraries shared a children's book recommendation each day on social media.

Most suited towards younger readers, or for anyone that loves a picture book, you will find a glorious collection of great reads that showcase the talent, creativity and colour of the wonderful writers and illustrators on the green Isle.

While we created this online exhibition for December 2021, these books can be enjoyed and read at any time of the year, so keep the recommendations close at hand for when you want your next great picture book.

Reader Pens

Reader Pens read words and full lines of text aloud for independent reading. Those with dyslexia, those who have difficulty with reading or pronunciation, those learning languages or those with vision problems will find these pens extremely helpful pieces of technology.

This device reads text out with natural speaking voice. The pens have built-in dictionaries so you can access definitions as you read for better understanding.

These devices can be borrowed, by any library user for an eight week loan period. To access these pens please email libraryculture@dlrcoco.ie

New additions to dlr Libraries ASC Collection

dlr Libraries are delighted to announce recent additions to our ASC lending collection thanks to Dormant Account Funding 2021.
The ASC lending collection includes sensory/tactile toys and equipment; tools to help build motor skills and items that may help develop life skills and literacy.
New additions available to borrow include See and Learn kits to aid literacy skills for those with Down Syndrome, fine motor skills games, sensory toys and LEGO sets.

Launch of “Stirring Memories: Stories of Yesterday”

We are pleased to announce the launch of the audio-visual exhibition Stirring Memories: Stories of Yesterday, on Thursday 24th February 2022 at 2:30PM. The exhibition will be on display on Level 3, dlr LexIcon, Haigh Terrace, Moran Park, Dún Laoghaire from the 24th of February to the 30th of April.

What was life like in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown over the years? Storyteller Helena Byrne posed this question to members of local day care centres. Peter Pearson: Art and Artefacts of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown

17 February – 30 April 2022, Level 3, dlr LexIcon

Peter Pearson is well-known as a passionate advocate for the conservation of Ireland's architectural heritage, also as a historian and highly regarded painter. He is the author of numerous publications including Dún Laoghaire/Kingstown and Between the Mountains and the Sea. His new book The Granite Coast (O'Brien Press) will be published later in 2022. This exhibition is a celebration of his wide-ranging work and was launched by An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Lettie McCarthy to a packed audience on Thursday 17 February
